Let’s Talk Money

"

Money is a tool. Use it but don’t let it use you.

George S. Clason

When I realised I wanted to leave teaching, the biggest barrier I had to break through was how I was going to continue to provide a good, stable income for my family. Teaching earned me a good wage and the teacher pension scheme is one of the best out there. It made me feel so trapped. I would often search for £40 000+ jobs and wondered how it could ever be possible.

I had a breakthrough when I watched a YouTube video that had been made by a woman who had her own tutoring business. In it, she recommended that you stop googling £40 000+ job and start thinking multiple income streams. She suggested looking closely at your finances and working out your bottom line – what did you actually need to earn to pay the bills and have a bit for yourself too. Then, from there, work out what you needed to earn per day to ensure you made that amount each month.

This absolutely changed my money mindset. Stumbling across this video was probably one of the key moments in me actually being able to leave the profession as I knew it.

Money mindset is so important when you’re thinking about making a big change in your life. Financial worries can leave us feeling like we have no choice but to carry on as we are. But there is always choice.

I have done so much work on my money mindset in the past year. I feel more abundant than ever. That has come from realising that I have everything I need. I don’t have a lavish lifestyle, nor do I need it. Money, for me, allows me to have a safe, warm home and provides my family with everything they need. Of course, I will always strive for more, who wouldn’t want the luxury of regular holidays and wonderful life experiences. But what I have realised more than ever before is that time is much more precious than money. And I have so much more of that to give to my family. And when I see the impact that me leaving teaching has had on my children, I have no doubt in my mind that I have made the best possible decision.

Wanting more money isn’t a bad thing. It’s a great thing to strive for, if it motivates you to move forward in life. But if it’s holding you back, it’s time to work on that money mindset!
